What's in Your Toothpaste
Your teeth are dirty. What better way to clean them than with good old toothpaste? Well, you may not think that way once you know what’s actually inside it. Most toothpaste is made up of these ingredients: water, detergent, chalk, seaweed, peppermint oil, menthol, saccharin, titanium dioxide, glycerine glycol, paraffin, and formaldehyde. Now, water: toothpaste is “30 to 45 percent water” so you’re basically paying a toonie per pound of water. Detergent does nothing but make “foam and suds”, and chalk, which is one of the only things that’s gentle yet tough enough to clean your tooth enamel.
Chalk. The kind teachers use. There is also seaweed, a “concoction made from the seaweed known scientifically as Chrondus crispus…". It "oozes and stretches in all directions and holds the paste together”. Next batch of ingredients: peppermint oil, menthol, and saccharin. These cover the nasty taste of the detergent. Titanium Dioxide is another ingredient. It paints your teeth white for a while until it “dissolves and is swallowed”. It’s also in white paint to “make it bright”. Glycerine glycol keeps the mixture from drying out (it’s also in antifreeze), Paraffin in “deprived from petroleum” and it keeps “the mixture smooth”, and then there is formaldehyde, a chemical compound that can preserve corpses and treat warts. It “kills the bacteria that creep into the tube from your brush and the bathroom counter”. Yum. You don’t really need toothpaste, really. Water can be just as effective, with brushing, and so can homemade toothpaste. Also, with homemade toothpaste, at least you know what the heck is going into it. Just something to think about the next time you brush.
